Michael Hoffmann, a South African national, is a program officer in the Biodiversity Assessment Unit, a joint initative between Conservation International's Center for Applied Biodiversity Science and IUCN's Species Survival Commission. His primary duty is coordinating and facilitating initiatives aimed at assessing the global status of biodiversity.
Although he considers himself a bit of a generalist, Mike's main area of expertise lies in the field of mammalogy, having worked at the Mammal Research Institute at the University of Pretoria, South Africa, and at the Wildlife Conservation Research Unit at the University of Oxford, United Kingdom.
He has edited six books, including the forthcoming The Mammals of Africa and Threatened Amphibians of the World, and authored approximately 30 book chapters and peer-reviewed papers, including four in the journals Nature and Science.
